Building Academic Community

The Topaz Project was initiated to produce an open-source publishing platform to sustain the needs of increasingly wired scientific community. The inaugural site needed to balance interactive tools alongside with research content.

The PLoS ONE brand was defined on top of the recent re-brand of the existing journals. Launch-dependent interactive features were identified, produced, and refined in collaboration with a Javascript developer. Within three months, the PLoS ONE site was developed, designed, and launched.

Designing Scientific Literature

PLoS, a non-profit publishing startup, launched with the mission of "making the world's scientific and medical literature a public resource." By 2006, the organization was publishing five web-based journals and required a web presence which would suppport a high volume of content by a resource-constrained team.

The redesign focused on optimizing readability for the text-centric content. A constrained-width fluid layout was established to best serve a wide-range of browsing requirements for an international user-base; each of the five journals was skinned with a unique palette for consistency and efficiency of production. Tableless, semantic XHTML templates were created for existent and future content, and a CSS-controlled presentation layer was implemented. IAB standard banner slots were introduced to leverage previously untapped opportunities for advertising revenue.
