Peer-review journal PLoS Medicine launched in 2004 with a radical twist on the conventional medical literature - all content is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
The groundbreaking intentions of the journal demanded a similarly fresh approach towards illustrating the literature. For magazine-style content including essays and editorials, a collage-based approach was applied to weave traces of literal references with those of the more literary.
Colors were selected with careful consideration of the exisiting article palette in order to maximize readability of surrounding type while ensuring a vivid splash at every opportunity.
